Public bug reported:

Package: gnome-control-center

Summary

In Settings → System → Remote Desktop → Desktop Sharing, the username
and password fields consistently appear blank after navigating to
another Settings page and returning. Desktop Sharing itself remains
functional: repeated RDP connections using the existing credentials
succeed. Remote Login also works and retains its displayed login
details.

Environment

Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, arm64, X11
- gnome-control-center: 1:46.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.6
- gnome-keyring: 46.1-2ubuntu0.2
- libsecret-1-0: 0.21.4-1build3
- gnome-remote-desktop: 46.3-0ubuntu1.2

These installed versions matched the official Noble candidates checked
on 2026-10-14.

Steps on the affected system

1. Open Settings → System → Remote Desktop → Desktop Sharing.
2. Navigate to another Settings page, without logging out.
3. Return to Desktop Sharing.
4. Observe that both login fields are blank, although RDP authentication with
the existing credentials still succeeds.

This is consistently reproducible on the affected system. The steps that
originally created the stale Secret Service item are unknown.
Reproduction on a clean installation has not been established.

Expected result

Settings should populate the username and masked password fields from
the available credentials. If a keyring inconsistency prevents loading,
it should display an actionable error rather than silently presenting
empty fields.

Investigation

The keyring daemon is running and the default login collection is
unlocked. Settings, the sharing service, and the keyring use the same
user session bus. Directory/file permissions and available disk space
did not indicate a problem.

The login collection’s Items property lists
/org/freedesktop/secrets/collection/login/4, but querying that object’s
non-secret properties returns “No such secret item”. The RDP credential
item at /org/freedesktop/secrets/collection/login/5 exists and is
unlocked. No secret values were read during the diagnostic probes.

A metadata-only A/B comparison showed:
- Initialization with LOAD_COLLECTIONS fails on the missing item.
- Initialization with NONE, followed by retrieving the default collection and
checking its Locked property, succeeds.

The Ubuntu patch ubuntu/remote-desktop-sharing-handle-locked-
keyring.patch in the installed source version eagerly loads
collections/items. Its error path returns before populating the
credential fields. This supports the observed blank-field mechanism
despite working RDP authentication.

A candidate change avoiding unnecessary eager loading has been prepared,
but it has not been compiled, installed, or validated in the complete
Settings UI. The origin of the stale item remains unknown. This report
does not establish that the keyring file is corrupted or that the issue
is a regression.
