Hi dear Bethany,

first of all, thank you for your efforts in investigating and fixing the
USB 3.0 issue introduced with Ubuntu kernel 6.8.0-146.

Unfortunately, I encountered a serious boot problem after installing the
workaround provided through your PPA (`ppa:bjamison/lp2169169`).

I suspect that the workaround may have been specifically tailored to
kernel 6.8.0-146 and might not be compatible with kernel 6.8.0-147.

**System information:**
- Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad T450s
- Operating system: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- Affected kernel: 6.8.0-147-generic
- Previously working kernel: 6.8.0-142-generic
- Workaround repository: `ppa:bjamison/lp2169169`

**What happened:**

1. Kernel 6.8.0-142 worked correctly, including USB 3.0 functionality.
2. After upgrading to kernel 6.8.0-146, USB 3.0 stopped working.
3. I installed the workaround from your PPA to address this problem.
4. Unfortunately, I had already upgraded to kernel 6.8.0-147 in the
meantime.
5. After updating and rebooting, Ubuntu failed to boot and dropped
directly into the BusyBox `(initramfs)` emergency shell.

**Console output:**

The system displayed:

```text
BusyBox v1.36.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.36.1-6ubuntu3.1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)
```

I then checked the kernel command line:

```bash
(initramfs) cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.8.0-147-generic
root=UUID=d8459cc8-8b94-43ed-b66d-a0a39ccba932 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7
```

The following command produced no output:

```bash
(initramfs) blkid
```

I also checked whether the system could detect any storage devices:

```bash
(initramfs) ls /dev/nvme* /dev/sd*
ls: /dev/nvme*: No such file or directory
ls: /dev/sd*: No such file or directory
```

**My observations:**

The kernel itself appears to load, but the system cannot find or access
its root filesystem.

In particular, neither NVMe nor SATA/SCSI block devices appear to be
available in the initramfs environment.

This suggests a possible problem with storage controller initialization,
missing kernel modules, or an incomplete/incompatible initramfs.

Given that this occurred immediately after the kernel update and the
installation of the PPA workaround, I suspect a compatibility issue
between the workaround and kernel 6.8.0-147. However, I cannot confirm
the exact cause yet.

**Additional information:**

I also attempted to revert the packages from the PPA using:

```bash
sudo ppa-purge ppa:bjamison/lp2169169
```

The package information subsequently showed:

```text
linux-modules-6.8.0-147-generic:
   Installed: 6.8.0-147.147
   Candidate: 6.8.0-147.147
```

The installed package version was listed as coming from the official
Ubuntu `noble-updates` and `noble-security` repositories.

Unfortunately, kernel 6.8.0-142, which was the last version that worked
correctly on my system, is no longer available in my local installation,
so I cannot simply boot back into that version.

**Questions:**

Could the workaround provided through your PPA interfere with kernel
6.8.0-147, particularly with storage controller modules or initramfs
generation?

Is the workaround intended to support kernel 6.8.0-147, or was it
specifically developed and tested for 6.8.0-146?

Any advice on how to safely restore a bootable configuration would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you again for your work and support!

Best regards from Berlin, Germany
Thorsten
