** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-38-generic (package 7.0.0-38.38), GNOME
  Wayland. HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1900nc, DMI 15-ec1xxx, board 87B1,
  Ryzen 5 4600H. ELAN0718:00 04F3:30FD touchpad on AMDI0010:03 / i2c-0,
  I2C address 0x15, GPIO 11.

  Expected: touchpad works on normal startup.
  Actual: ordinary startup fails with "i2c_hid_acpi i2c-ELAN0718:00: failed to
fetch HID descriptor: -121". The ACPI/I2C device exists but no functioning
touchpad is registered.

  Reproduction:
  1. Boot normally without opening HP startup menu: no touchpad movement/clicks.
  2. Reboot, press Esc, then Enter to continue: touchpad works.
  3. Remote inspection confirms i2c_hid_acpi binding, hid-multitouch
registration and interrupts on the successful boot, with baseline kernel
parameters.

  Originally BIOS F.25; official HP SP156482 update to F.35 was installed
  in Windows and verified in Ubuntu. Ordinary boot still fails on F.35;
  Esc -> Enter still works. SecureBoot disabled, Platform Setup Mode. PS/2
  AUX is disabled even in the working I2C boot.

  Failed tests: normal warm reboot; full shutdown and wait; disconnect
  AC/USB and hold power 15 seconds; driver bind/reload/retries; DesignWare
  controller rebind; runtime power/control=on; verified i8042.nopnp;
  runtime bare PS/2 protocol; complete verified boot with i8042.reset
  i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop psmouse.proto=bare. The last test
  creates PS/2 Generic Mouse but physical movement/clicks do not work and
  I2C -121 persists. POST Hotkey Delay was already 10 seconds. All
  experimental boot entries have been removed. No custom kernel, ACPI
  override or persistent driver workaround installed.

  The extracted touchpad ACPI scope is identical between F.25 and F.35.
  Detailed failed/working snapshots are available, but differ in both boot
  path and test parameters; this limitation is explicit. Earlier ordinary
  baseline boot logs independently show -121. Firmware
  initialization/handoff is a hypothesis, not an established root cause.

  A complete ~5,000-word report with a 38-step intervention ledger, 23
  related reports, exact logs, good/bad snapshots, GPIO diff, ACPI
- excerpts and kernel/PCI information will be attached immediately after
- creation. Initial submission with attachment timed out; checking the
- account showed no issue was created.
+ excerpts and kernel/PCI information is attached as REPORT.md and hp-
+ touchpad-report.zip (39 files). Kernel version_signature and lspci -vnvn
+ are also attached separately. The ZIP includes SHA256SUMS and
+ privacy/redaction notes.

  (Esc -> Enter), upstream investigation https://lore-
  kernel.gnuweeb.org/linux-input/ap8JsxbZDmWxigZv%40eggarch/T/ (87B2/F.35;
  no confirmed final fix in inspected thread). Potentially related Ubuntu
  bugs 2161223 and 2165909 have different reported hardware details.

  Please advise which pre-probe controller/device state to capture or
  whether a platform quirk can reproduce the initialization performed by
  the HP startup menu. The owner confirms the laptop is currently working
  after Esc -> Enter. Report prepared with AI assistance, distinguishing
  measured output, owner tests and third-party claims.
