Regression checks in QEMU VMs (Q35, virtio-gpu) on 26.04, booted with
plymouth.debug. Compared 24.004.60+git20250831.4a3c171d-0ubuntu8 from the
archive with 24.004.60+git20250831.4a3c171d-0ubuntu8.2~ppa1 from
ppa:phantomba/verification.
Default install, both versions:
- A single centred logo and spinner at boot and shutdown. No visible
difference between the two versions.
- Plymouth starts on the firmware framebuffer (simpledrm, 1280x800) and
moves to virtio-gpu (1853x1105) once virtio_gpu loads, about 8.5 s into
boot. One head per device, no TILE messages.
- No failed units, no plymouth crash reports, no plymouth errors in the
journal.
Full-disk encryption (LUKS passphrase), both versions:
- The passphrase prompt appears. A wrong passphrase gets a retry, and the
correct one continues the boot.
- virtio-gpu is not in the initramfs, so the prompt is drawn on the
firmware framebuffer until the root filesystem is unlocked. This is the
same with 0ubuntu8. It also means that on any machine whose GPU driver
is not in the initramfs, the passphrase prompt is drawn before the
tiled-display code can run.
The 0ubuntu8.2~ppa1 debug log shows the new per-controller messages
("Setting scan out buffer of controller 36 to our buffer at 0,0"), so the
patched renderer runs from the initramfs.
The low-resolution phase before the GPU driver loads happens with
0ubuntu8 as well, which matches the explanation in comment #6 for
comment #4.
"Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file" from plymouthd appears
with both versions when plymouth.debug is set. plymouthd discards its
stderr otherwise. It is unrelated to this change.
