Public bug reported:
[Impact]
Missing Ethernet aliases prevent U-Boot from locating the corresponding
controllers when passing MAC addresses to Linux through DT.
Linux may still obtain a valid MAC from another source, such as
registers initialized by the bootloader. Otherwise, the MACB driver may
assign a random address, affecting DHCP identity, reservations and
provisioning.
On Jammy, this affects linux-xilinx-zynqmp on KV260 revA/revB, KR260
revA/revB and KD240. On Noble, it affects linux-xilinx on the same Kria
boards and VEK280 revA/revB.
[Fix]
For KR260 revB and KV260 revA/revB, use upstream commit eb4a09d8cc31.
This is a clean cherry-pick for Noble. Jammy requires overlay filename
and root-fragment context adjustments.
For KR260 revA and KD240, extract the Ethernet alias blocks from
upstream board-support commits 7030418d4ea3 and 4f96c5db61f2, without
backporting the complete board descriptions.
For VEK280 revA/revB on Noble, add ethernet0 = &gem0; to both board
descriptions. This is a local fix, not an upstream backport.
The changes add aliases only. They do not hard-code MAC addresses or
modify the MACB driver.
[Test Plan]
Boot with the candidate DTB/FIT and matching carrier overlay where
applicable.
Verify that the aliases resolve to the expected enabled controllers.
KR260 maps Ethernet 0/1 to GEM0/GEM1, KV260 maps Ethernet 0 to GEM3,
KD240 maps Ethernet 0 to GEM1, and VEK280 maps Ethernet 0 to GEM0.
Compare U-Boot ethaddr/ethNaddr, the MAC properties in the DT passed to
Linux and the corresponding interface addresses. Test without userspace
MAC overrides.
Verify link, DHCP, reservations and connectivity across warm reboots and
power cycles. Test both KR260 ports. Check interface naming and wait-
online behavior on normal boot and netboot.
[Where problems could occur]
Incorrect aliases could assign another port's MAC, causing duplicate
addresses or unexpected DHCP reservations.
Aliases can also affect predictable interface names. KV260 testing
showed an unresolved eth0/end0 naming conflict and wait-online timeout
with duplicate Netplan definitions. Netboot is a suspected factor, but
this has not been confirmed. The cause and persistent resolution must be
established before release.
[Other Info]
Local patch application, DT compilation/composition and alias mapping
checks passed for both series.
The change was tested on KV260 with Jammy kernel 5.15.0-1081-xilinx-
zynqmp and Noble kernel 6.8.0-1041-xilinx.
On both, ethernet0 and local-mac-address were absent before the changes.
Afterwards, the alias resolved to /axi/ethernet@ff0e0000, and the DT MAC
matched the interface MAC, 00:0a:35:2b:9f:45. The interface remained UP
with carrier.
