Independent confirmation — Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) I can independently confirm the same issue on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, upgraded from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
System environment: - GNOME Shell 50.1, Wayland session - Linux kernel 7.0.0-38-generic - AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D - NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti Investigation and findings: During GNOME session startup, gnome-session-service successfully launches /usr/bin/gnome-software --gapplication-service in a transient application scope. In the investigated session, the working process was PID 6496, running under app-gnome-org.gnome.Software-6496.scope and owning the D-Bus name org.gnome.Software. Almost simultaneously, systemd attempts to start gnome-software.service. The competing processes fail to acquire the same D-Bus name and exit with status 1. After three unsuccessful attempts, systemd reports Start request repeated too quickly. I verified that /usr/lib/systemd/user/gnome-session-services.target explicitly contains the following dependency at line 55: Wants=gnome-software.service Additional verification confirmed: - The service unit belongs to the official Ubuntu gnome-software package. - UnitFileState=static. - UnitFilePreset=enabled. - DropInPaths= is empty. - No conventional enablement symlinks were found in the examined system and user directories. - The generated [email protected] did not execute during the investigated session. - GNOME Software itself remains functional, despite gnome-software.service being reported as failed. Conclusion: These findings independently reproduce the dual-startup race described in this bug report. The evidence indicates that GNOME Session and systemd attempt to start GNOME Software concurrently, resulting in a conflict over the same D-Bus name. No workaround has been applied. All distribution-provided configuration files remain unchanged. I am keeping the original configuration intact while awaiting an official fix.
