Results of the requested tests (steps 3 and 4):

* mutter 50.1-0ubuntu2.2 (downgraded + held, 2026-10-13): the leak is
unchanged. Two DPMS-off
  windows with DP-1 flapping: Shmem 1.7 -> 14.2 GB in 31 min and 1.8 -> 12.9 GB
in 29 min
  (~25 GB/h, same as with 2.4), freed again when the screens wake. Overnight it
again ran into OOM:
  the user session died, then the GDM greeter leaked and was
OOM-killed/respawned every ~1h40m.

* gnome-shell 50.1-0ubuntu1.2 + mutter 2.2 (2026-10-15): same leak rate
whenever DP-1 flaps.
  The only clean night was one where I had switched the LG monitor off with its
power button:
  then DP-1 stays "connected", there is no HPD flapping and Shmem stays flat.

So this is not a regression in 50.1-0ubuntu2.3/2.4 (the title is wrong on that
point). It is
triggered purely by the connector hotplug flapping, and it happens in the GDM
greeter with no
user apps running.

Back on mutter 50.1-0ubuntu2.4 / gnome-shell 50.1-0ubuntu1.4 (2026-10-20), the
same thing again:
DP-1 flapping ~240-260 times/h from 18:00, Shmem 27-29 GB, OOM at 19:45 and
21:14 (user session
lost), then the greeter OOM-cycled at 22:54, 00:35, 03:15, 04:55, 06:35 and
08:16. Most of the
Shmem is ShmemHugePages.

The report from comment #4 (Ubuntu 24.04, mutter 46.2, Intel Raptor Lake i915,
flapping Dell DP
monitor, greeter leaking ~10 MB per hotplug) looks like the same bug, so it
also affects mutter 46.

Current workaround: power off the DP monitor by hand instead of letting
it go into standby.
