Public bug reported:
With the Tray Icon plugin enabled, Zim’s system tray entry appears in
GNOME as a generic three-dots placeholder instead of the Zim icon. Zim
publishes the tray item with IconName set to zim, but no icon by that
name exists in the hicolor theme. The installed hicolor icons are all
named org.zim_wiki.Zim.
# Steps to reproduce
1. On Ubuntu 26.04.1 with Zim installed from the .deb package, enable the Tray
Icon plugin.
2. Run `zim --plugin trayicon`, or start Zim normally.
3. Look at the tray in the top bar.
# Expected result
The Zim icon appears in the tray.
# Actual result
A three-dots placeholder appears. `journalctl -b /usr/bin/gnome-shell |
grep -i icon` shows:
Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme.
# Diagnostic details
The StatusNotifierItem registered by Zim is
`:1.49@/org/ayatana/NotificationItem/zim_desktop_wiki`. Its properties
are:
IconName: s "zim"
IconThemePath: s ""
Installed icons matching `*zim*` under `/usr/share/icons` and
`/usr/share/pixmaps`:
* `hicolor/{16x16,22x22,24x24,32x32,48x48}/apps/org.zim_wiki.Zim.png`
* `hicolor/scalable/apps/org.zim_wiki.Zim.svg`
* `hicolor/*/mimetypes/application-x-zim-notebook.*`
* `ubuntu-mono-light/apps/22/zim-panel.svg`
* `ubuntu-mono-dark/apps/22/zim-panel.svg`
The only icons with a name close to `zim` are `zim-panel` in the
`ubuntu-mono-*` themes, which are not the active theme. Since
`IconThemePath` is empty, Zim gives the shell no other place to look.
# Workaround
Symlinking the installed icons to the requested name in the user’s icon
directory fixes it:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps
~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps
ln -s /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/org.zim_wiki.Zim.svg
~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/zim.svg
ln -s /usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/org.zim_wiki.Zim.png
~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/zim.png
After restarting Zim, the icon displays correctly.
# Suspected cause
The icon files were renamed to the app ID (`org.zim_wiki.Zim`), but the
tray plugin still requests the old name `zim`. I haven’t looked at Zim’s
source, so I can’t say whether the fix belongs in the plugin, which
should request the new name, or in the packaging, which should also ship
an icon named zim.
