Hi, Thanks for the detailed bug report. You suspect this is an upstream kernel issue, have you tried replicating this using the mainline kernels? You can find them here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/
If you can still replicate it on the mainline kernels, consider opening a bug report upstream. I'm sure they would also appreciate if you could determine if this was always broken or whether it's a regression (and if so, what the last working release was and the following release that broke it).
