Correcting two things in the description.
First, the commit is upstream, not an Ubuntu patch. It is
dd214733544427587a95f66dbf3adff072568990, authored 2026-05-21 by Michael
Bommarito and committed by Luiz Augusto von Dentz on 2026-06-03, carrying
Cc: [email protected]. My remark that vanilla 6.8, 6.12 and 6.15 do not
contain the check was about those release tags predating it, and it reads as
if this were specific to Ubuntu. It is not - every tree following stable
gets it. What is still true for Ubuntu is the practical impact: the stable
backport reached noble and broke working hardware on a routine update.
Second, my "suggested handling" was wrong and should not be acted on as
written. I proposed answering Echo Requests regardless of size. That is
exactly the behaviour the commit removed, and it exists for a reason -
quoting the commit message:
a Bluetooth BR/EDR peer within radio range, before pairing, can force
168 ECHO_RSP frames from one 681-byte fixed-channel signaling packet
containing packed ECHO_REQ commands
So the workaround of raising L2CAP_SIG_MTU, which is what I am running
locally, reopens that amplification vector. Anyone applying it should know
that.
A fix has to keep the attack closed. Two differences between the attack and
this device look usable: the amplification happens before pairing, while the
FreeBuds frame arrives after Encryption Change from a bonded peer; and the
attack packs 168 commands into one packet, while the earbuds send exactly
one. Bounding the number of commands dispatched per signalling packet, or
relaxing the size limit only on encrypted links, would cover both.
I have taken that argument to [email protected], where a fix
would have to land. For Ubuntu the useful outcome here is probably picking
up whatever upstream settles on, and in the meantime a release-note mention,
since affected users have no way to connect the symptom to the kernel.
