I can confirm a very similar issue on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with Intel i915 and Mutter 46.2.
System configuration: - Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic - GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 770 (Raptor Lake-S, 8086:a780), i915 - GNOME Shell: 46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.16 - Mutter: 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.18 - Mesa (libgl1-mesa-dri, libegl-mesa0, libgbm1): 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.4 - libdrm2: 2.4.125-1ubuntu0.1~24.04.2 - Xwayland: 2:23.2.6-1ubuntu0.8 - RAM: 64 GiB, swap: 8 GiB - Displays: two Samsung S24R65x monitors connected via DisplayPort Observed behavior: When the workstation is left unattended, DP-2 generates DRM 'HOTPLUG=1' events approximately every 9.44 seconds (CONNECTOR=526). ShmemHugePages increases in 44 MiB steps roughly every 9–10 seconds, sometimes growing even faster and exceeding 8 GiB within minutes. Terminating the GDM- owned Xwayland process restarts the greeter session and releases almost all accumulated memory (e.g. 8668 MiB -> 94 MiB). As a temporary workaround, I implemented a simple watchdog script that periodically checks ShmemHugePages and terminates the GDM-owned Xwayland process when memory usage exceeds 8 GiB. Powering off the affected monitor causes DP-2 to report 'disconnected' and stops the recurring hotplug events. With both monitors powered off and the watchdog disabled, ShmemHugePages remained at 20 MiB after several hours. The correlation between repeated hotplug events and memory growth is strong, although the component retaining the buffers has not been identified. Additional observation: The same monitors were used on a different workstation with Ubuntu 20.04 in 2021, where the physical login screen frequently woke up spontaneously while unattended. No memory leak was confirmed at that time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2170511 Title: Shmem leak (~25 GB/h) leading to OOM when a DisplayPort monitor repeatedly hotplugs while DPMS is off (regression in 50.1-0ubuntu2.4) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2170511/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
