Public bug reported:

When journald rotates its logs I get error messages like these:

[<time>] systemd-journald[582]: Failed to write entry to
/var/log/journal/<sysid>/user-1000.journal (33 items, 1008 bytes) despite
vacuuming, ignoring: Input/output error (Dropped 69 similar message(s))
[<time>] systemd-journald[582]: Failed to write entry to
/var/log/journal/<sysid>/system.journal (24 items, 732 bytes) despite
vacuuming, ignoring: Input/output error (Dropped 3 similar message(s))
[<time>] systemd-journald[582]: Failed to write entry to
/var/log/journal/<sysid>/system.journal (24 items, 732 bytes) despite
vacuuming, ignoring: Input/output error (Dropped 3216 similar message(s))

HD contains no bad block as far as smartctl can report; FS is clean on
reboot.

No other processes nor journal entries report I/O errors.

When I vacuum clean or rotate manually, journalctl cleans or rotates
withtout error. Journalctl --verify reports PASS on all.

Error happens only on systemd-scheduled rotations, at random times (every week
or so), but crashes the sytem (everything else starts crashing, must reboot).
