Public bug reported:
System:
- Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
- Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
- Installed kernel package version: 7.0.0-38.38
- Lenovo Legion 7 16AGP11 (Type 83Q8), AMD Ryzen AI 7 450
- Realtek ALC287, codec subsystem ID 17aa:3956
- Built-in HARMAN speakers, configured as Analog Stereo
Problem:
The Ubuntu volume slider does not adjust the built-in speakers normally. Most
of the perceived volume change occurs near the bottom of the slider. At lower
settings, the sound becomes muffled and bass-heavy; raising the slider makes it
progressively brighter. Bluetooth audio and wired headphones work normally.
Expected:
The slider should adjust the built-in speakers’ volume without substantially
changing their tonal balance, including the bass.
Observed:
- The desktop slider tracks the ALSA “Speaker” control; “Master” remains at 0
dB.
- The “Bass Speaker” switch is on. “AMP1 Speaker” and “AMP2 Speaker” remain at
400 [89%] [0.00 dB] as the slider moves.
- In the codec topology, speaker output node 0x14 connects to DAC 0x02, which
has a volume control. Bass Speaker output node 0x17 normally selects connection
index 2, leading to DAC 0x06, which has no volume control.
- Muting “Bass Speaker” makes slider changes gradual, but the sound becomes
weak and tinny.
Reproduction and workaround test:
1. With the normal routing, node 0x17 has connection selector 0x2.
2. Set node 0x17 to connection index 0:
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC2D0 0x17 SET_CONNECT_SEL 0x00
3. This routes node 0x17 to DAC 0x02 and makes the slider adjust the speakers
normally, including the bass.
4. With snd_hda_intel power saving enabled, the selector returns to 0x2 after
audio playback idles, and the issue returns. Stopping WirePlumber does not
prevent the reset.
5. Setting /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save to 0 prevents the
reversion; setting it back to 1 causes the reversion again.
Additional kernel observation:
The codec reports subsystem ID 17aa:3956, but the kernel log says it “picked
fixup for PCI SSID 17aa:0000.” Two Cirrus CS35L56 amplifiers are detected, and
the 17aa3956 speaker DSP firmware/amp files are loaded. Attached is the codec
report showing the connection of 0x17 before the workaround (0x06 @ index 2 is
selected; after the workaround 0x02 @ index 0 is selected).
Request:
Please investigate whether the ALC287 speaker routing needs a model-specific
ALSA/HDA fixup for the Lenovo Legion 7 16AGP11 (Type 83Q8, subsystem ID
17aa:3956), so node 0x17 uses the volume-controlled DAC and the routing remains
correct after audio idles.
