Additional data from a z15 KVM guest (machine type 8561), xenial, 4.4.0-291-generic, s390x.
The same snapd revision fails here too, with a different symptom: snapd[4078]: Fatal glibc error: CPU lacks VXRS_EXT2 support (z15 or later required) snapd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=127/n/a Every snap client command fails with the same glibc error. /snap/snapd/current -> /snap/snapd/28648 The snapd journal shows the test walking through the channels: stable: revision 28258, snapd 2.77.1 - starts fine candidate: revision 28329, snapd 2.78 - starts fine beta: no updates available edge: revision 28648 (2.78+g235.8d4d073) - fails to start So the problem is limited to the latest/edge revision 28648. Its bundled glibc requires a z15 (arch13) baseline and checks the VXRS_EXT2 hwcap. On this z15 guest the 4.4 kernel does not report vxe or vxe2: $ grep features /proc/cpuinfo features : esan3 zarch stfle msa ldisp eimm dfp edat etf3eh highgprs te vx $ LD_SHOW_AUXV=1 /bin/true | grep HWCAP AT_HWCAP: esan3 zarch stfle msa ldisp eimm dfp edat etf3eh highgprs te vx As a result, revision 28648 cannot run on xenial 4.4 s390x regardless of CPU generation: - On z13 (kernel01) the loader hits SIGILL on SELGR in _dl_start before glibc can run its CPU check. - On z15 the instructions execute, but glibc aborts because the kernel does not report the VXRS_EXT2 hwcap. This is not a regression introduced by 4.4.0-291.325. On kernel01 the test failed at the first (stable) refresh, most likely because 28648 had already been installed from edge by an earlier run. This could not be confirmed, since no journal was available there. The test then fails with: AssertionError: Failed to refresh snap snapd to track latest/edge error: cannot communicate with server: ... connection refused -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2172336 Title: snap commands failed with Illegal instruction (core dumped) on s390x Z13 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-kernel-tests/+bug/2172336/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
