Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 26.04 (GNOME Shell 50.1-0ubuntu1, Wayland session) gnome-shell regularly freezes when the screen locks.
Symptoms: - Screen freezes during/after locking, no input accepted; only a VT switch (Ctrl+Alt+F3) works. Recovery requires `systemctl restart gdm`. - At every freeze the journal contains: "gsd-media-keys: Couldn't lock screen: Timeout was reached" (observed Oct 24 01:01, Oct 27 20:00, Oct 28 23:12 local time). - gnome-shell burns CPU constantly: systemd session accounting reports 16h03m of CPU time over 14h32m wall clock (~110% average, one core always busy). - Severe memory leak: over a day-long session gnome-shell grows to 12.6 GB / 12.1 GB RSS peaks (plus 2.9 GB swap) before freezing. - On Oct 27 12:58 gnome-shell also crashed with SIGSEGV (apport dump available: /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash). - Stopping the hung shell requires SIGKILL: "[email protected]: State 'stop-sigterm' timed out. Killing." - Nothing relevant in the kernel log: no amdgpu errors (AMD RX 7600), no OOM kills, no GPU resets — the failure is purely in userspace.
