Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS (Noble) completely froze while running kernel
7.0.0-38-generic.

The entire graphical session and system became unresponsive. Keyboard
and mouse no longer responded and I had to force power off the laptop by
holding the power button.

System information:
- Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS
- Wayland / GNOME
- Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
- Intel Meteor Lake-P integrated GPU: 8086:7dd5 rev 08
- Graphics driver: i915
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 also present
- 16 GB RAM
- 4 GB swap
- External display connected over USB-C

The affected boot started at approximately 2026-10-30 10:54:30 CET.

The hard freeze occurred at approximately 15:27 CET.

The last journal entry from the affected boot is at 15:27:53, after
which no further logs were written until the next boot.

Shortly before the freeze, GNOME/libinput reported increasing system
latency:

15:26:44:
"client bug: timer event5 hold: scheduled expiry is in the past (-153ms), your
system is too slow"

15:27:00:
"client bug: timer event5 tap: scheduled expiry is in the past (-446ms), your
system is too slow"

15:27:01:
"client bug: timer event5 hold: scheduled expiry is in the past (-631ms), your
system is too slow"

Shortly afterwards, memory pressure was reported:

15:27:16:
systemd-resolved: Under memory pressure, flushing caches.

15:27:17 and 15:27:20:
systemd-journald: Under memory pressure, flushing caches.

No kernel OOM kill was recorded.
systemd-oomd did not kill any process.
No explicit GPU HANG, NVRM Xid, kernel panic, or NVMe I/O error was recorded.
/sys/fs/pstore/ was empty after reboot.

Some USB disconnect/reconnect events appear at approximately 15:27.
These should not be considered the initial cause of the freeze: I
manually disconnected and reconnected the USB-C monitor/charger while
attempting to recover the already frozen system.

At the time of the freeze, the system was running a normal desktop workload
including:
- Google Chrome with more than 20 tabs
- Visual Studio Code
- Zotero
- terminals
- external display over USB-C

The Intel i915 driver reports during boot:

"GuC firmware i915/mtl_guc_70.bin (70.53.0) is recommended, but only
i915/mtl_guc_70.bin (70.36.0) was found"

and loads GuC firmware version 70.36.0.

After the crash I updated Ubuntu firmware packages to the current Noble
updates versions, including:

linux-firmware-intel-graphics 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.1

After reboot the kernel still loads GuC 70.36.0 and still reports that
70.53.0 is recommended.

Kernel history:
- 2026-10-12: 7.0.0-34-generic
- Since 2026-10-15: 7.0.0-38-generic
- 2026-10-30: first complete hard freeze observed

Expected result:
The desktop and kernel should remain responsive under normal desktop usage.

Actual result:
The entire machine became completely unresponsive and required a forced
power-off.

I have not manually installed upstream firmware or modified i915
parameters. I am currently staying on Ubuntu-supported packages.

I can provide the complete journal from the previous boot and additional
diagnostic information if required.
