Public bug reported: [ Impact ]
* ThinkPad CS27 enablement requires fingerprint authentication with Synaptics USB 06cb:01a4 and Goodix USB 27c6:65ba. These IDs are absent from the drivers and patch series in the refreshed Ubuntu resolute libfprint source branch (1:1.95.1+tod1-0ubuntu2). Users of these readers therefore need the upstream device-enablement changes to use the readers through libfprint/fprintd and enable fingerprint login. * Backport the Synaptics ID-table and autosuspend-hwdb additions, and adapt the Goodix change for 27c6:65ba, including its required selection of 12 enrollment samples and autosuspend entry. The intended scope is these two requested IDs, not the other three IDs in the Goodix commit. * The originating request is SUTTON-5950. Specific leading platforms, target kernel, installed libfprint versions, and on-hardware failure logs have not yet been provided. This report is based on the enablement request and source inspection, not a claimed hardware reproduction. [ Test Plan ] * Obtain target systems with each of 06cb:01a4 and 27c6:65ba. Confirm the full USB IDs with lsusb and record the machine model, Ubuntu release, kernel, and libfprint/fprintd package versions. * On Ubuntu 26.04 with the existing libfprint package, check device discovery using fprintd-list for the test user and record the actual failure to discover, enroll, or authenticate. Do not assume that a different installed OEM/TOD driver has the same behavior. * Install the candidate package in a controlled test environment. Confirm discovery of each reader. In Settings, enable Fingerprint Login and enroll a test fingerprint. For Goodix 27c6:65ba, also verify that enrollment completes with the device-specific 12-stage setting. * Log out and authenticate with the enrolled fingerprint. Repeat after reboot, and after suspend/resume where supported. Confirm password authentication remains usable. Check reader operation after idle USB autosuspend and wakeup. * Regression-test an already-supported Synaptics reader and an already-supported Goodix MOC reader, including enrollment, verification, and suspend/resume. Run the package build and available automated tests, including hwdb/udev-generation checks. * Record exact tested versions, device IDs, and results. The above tests are planned; no candidate package or hardware verification is claimed by this report. Enrollment must be performed by an authorized tester; do not publish fingerprints, templates, or other biometric data. [ Where problems could occur ] * An ID-table addition may cause libfprint to claim a device revision whose firmware or protocol is incompatible with the existing driver. This could result in initialization, enrollment, or authentication failures on the newly enabled readers. * The Goodix change sets 12 enrollment samples for PID 65ba. An incorrect backport of that selection could cause enrollment not to complete or incorrect progress reporting. Changes to the shared probe switch or ID table could accidentally affect existing Goodix readers. * The new autosuspend entries change USB power handling for the added IDs. Readers may fail to wake after idle or suspend/resume, or show different power consumption. Incorrect hwdb generation or packaging could also omit the intended power-management rules. [ Other Info ] * Synaptics upstream commit: 0209e7735e6cb6a75a78101fe4f619f73345ad4f https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/commit/0209e7735e6cb6a75a78101fe4f619f73345ad4f Subject: synaptics: add new PID 0x1A4 Adds 06cb:01a4 to the Synaptics driver and autosuspend hwdb. This commit is merged in upstream master and contained in tag v1.94.100. * Goodix upstream commit: 83346fc8bcbe244d3376d1505be71cd10c75910b https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/commit/83346fc8bcbe244d3376d1505be71cd10c75910b Subject: goodixmoc:Add pid 0x65BA, 0x6515, 0x66AC, 0x660A Adds four Goodix IDs and hwdb entries, sets 12 enrollment samples for 65ba and 17 for 6515. It is merged in upstream master; no containing release tag was found in the fetched repository. The intended SRU adapts only the 65ba portions; 6515, 66ac, and 660a are outside this request. A raw application of the full commit does not apply cleanly to the resolute baseline and must not be used without adaptation. * Originating Jira: https://warthogs.atlassian.net/browse/SUTTON-5950 The Jira acceptance criterion is login using an enrolled fingerprint. Elan USB 04f3:0cb5 is also requested there but is explicitly excluded from this SRU: no upstream enablement commit has been identified, and the Jira discussion requests vendor/upstream support first. * Ubuntu target: resolute / Ubuntu 26.04. Archive inspection at filing preparation found release version 1:1.95.1+tod1-0ubuntu1, updates version 1:1.95.1+tod1-0ubuntu2, and no published proposed version. The reviewed resolute base is: 81a1a44dc0c6d5a838307cb4c58aefced43c66ee Neither requested ID is present in its relevant source/hwdb/patches. * Development-series fix status: the refreshed Ubuntu ubuntu/devel branch at e961cade3c7569b29a70ab76cfbd084294a9b295 (1:1.95.2+tod1-1ubuntu2, stonking) also lacks these ID additions. Development-series integration is still required; an upstream merge must not be mistaken for an Ubuntu development-series upload. * Reference SRU structure and packaging lessons: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libfprint/+bug/2133704 Avoid unrelated quilt patch churn and use a correct target-series version when preparing an upload. No upload version is selected here. * Hardware verification: not yet performed. No backport package has been built or uploaded. Resolute series nomination/task and normal SRU review/verification remain required. ** Affects: libfprint (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: jira-sutton-5950 oem-priority ** Tags added: jira-sutton-5950 oem-priority -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2172616 Title: [SRU] Enable Synaptics 06cb:01a4 and Goodix 27c6:65ba fingerprint readers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libfprint/+bug/2172616/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
