Hi, I tried UKUI on a regular Ubuntu 26.10 install (GNOME default) and
ran into several issues. Reporting them in case they help.
System:
- Ubuntu 26.10, Intel i3-3210, AMD Radeon RX 560 4 GB (Mesa), HDD
- Installed: ukui-desktop-environment (+ core, extras)
- PipeWire 1.6.8
1) "UKUI" X11 session is listed but does not work
- After login: black background, only desktop icons (Peony),
no panel, everything scaled very large.
- Cause: ukui-kwin is not in the 26.10 archive.
`apt-cache search kwin | grep -iE "ukui|kylin"` only shows
kylin-wayland-compositor, kylin-wayland-compositor-tools, libkywc1.
- ukui-panel and ukui-session-manager are installed, but there is no
X11 window manager.
- Suggestion: either package ukui-kwin, or don't ship ukui.desktop
in /usr/share/xsessions without a working WM.
2) No Alt+Tab in "Kylin Wlcom" (Wayland) session
- The Wayland session works (panel, sound), but window switching
with Alt+Tab does nothing, and there is no default shortcut for it.
- ukui-window-switch crashes on Wayland:
Wnck-WARNING: libwnck is designed to work in X11 only,
no valid display found
Wnck-CRITICAL: wnck_screen_get_active_workspace:
assertion 'WNCK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
- So a custom shortcut to ukui-window-switch can't work either.
3) Keyboard layout in Kylin Wlcom
- Adding a second layout (Slovak) wasn't straightforward.
- `sudo localectl set-x11-keymap sk,us pc105 "" grp:alt_shift_toggle`
fails with "Failed to set keymap: Access denied".
4) Translations
- The Slovak translation is incomplete and has grammar errors in
several dialogs.
Side issue (Unity, not UKUI): after the UKUI install I also had
ubuntu-unity-desktop and PulseAudio, which conflicted with
pipewire-pulse (no sound). ubuntu-unity-desktop 0.30 requires
pulseaudio and removes pipewire-audio/pipewire-alsa on 26.10.
Unity 7.7.1+26.04 now starts without panel/launcher on 26.10.
Overall the Kylin Wlcom session looks really nice, thanks for the work.
