Hi,
I just (twice unsuccessfully) tried to upgrade a virtual cloud machine
running a mailserver to upgrade from 24.04.5 to 26.04.1 using do-
release-upgrade. Luckily I've made a snapshot before, so I could revert
and try again several times.
First try:
dovecot's configuration syntax has changed. Therefore, my local configs,
that were working well under 24.04, cause dovecot to abort with error
messages under 26.04 (I need to recreate them with ansible after update
to change these to new dovecot syntax). It causes dovecot restart to
fail during upgrading, which causes do-release-upgrade to abort the
upgrade process and does not complete (e.g. cleanup, remove old
packages, reboot).
Second try, removed my dovecot configuration before upgrading:
same problem again, because now unconfigured postfix occupies port 587
(submission) and unconfigured dovecot-submission fails with „port in
use“, and again, do-release-upgrade fails and does not finish the job.
Third try: completely removed all dovecot packages before do-release-
upgrade. Success.
So, whatever I do, dovecot breaks the upgrade process, unless dovecot is
completely removed and reinstalled after upgrade.
There should be a way to tell do-release-upgrade "For god's sake, just ignore
that damned process failing and go on, I will and have to fix this after
completing the upgrade and rebooting" (simply by running ansible again), for
the simple fact, that I cannot use the new dovecot syntax before having the
machine run under 26.04.
