Public bug reported:

I'd like to report a reproducible crash of the Ubuntu Linux window
system brought on by the current version of Zoom, version 7.2.5.6661,
and also at least version 7.1.5.4332. When this crash occurs, the user
loses all active windows and the current login session, but the machine
does not reboot. In a few moments, it presents a new login screen.

So, it is probably a bug in the window system (which should never crash,
no matter what a user application does) that is triggered by something
peculiar that Zoom does. I've reporting it separately to the Zoom team.
It's bug TS2489627 there. However, there is certainly an xorg problem,
as the server should never crash.

The ubuntu-bug app requested that I create a backtrace and linked a web
page for instructions. However, the web page (on the new wiki) was
blank and just had instructions for making a new web page.

To reproduce:

plug in an external monitor
start Zoom meeting
record to cloud (it crashes whether the recording is started after the share
starts or automatically when the meeting starts, before the share)
share screen on the external monitor
unplug the external monitor
screen freezes with no mouse cursor, then goes blank, then login prompter
screen appears

The behavior I expect is that the windows on the external monitor remap
to the primary monitor, the Zoom call continues, but perhaps without
screen sharing.

In a slight variant, there is no window-system crash. If I record to
computer rather than to cloud, when I unplug the external monitor, the
windows on that monitor remap to the primary monitor. While the window
system does not crash, the local Zoom app may or may not crash. If it
crashes, the Zoom meeting is still running and I can reconnect to it
when I restart my Zoom app by typing in the meeting ID number. I tested
twice and Zoom crashed once, but not the second time. Without the
recording, zoom does not crash if I unplug the external monitor while
sharing it.

You might ask why anyone would unplug an external monitor while sharing.
It's actually quite common for me. If I am presenting and sharing the
external monitor that is the projector, and the meeting is being
recorded, I'm used to just unplugging and walking away from the lectern
for the next presenter to go. I forget that I'm sharing on Zoom and
need to stop sharing before unplugging, or else. I didn't used to have
to stop sharing. I should be able just to unplug and get off stage.

I'm running Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen7. All
updates applied. I've confirmed this with several different external
monitor setups and the setup specifics don't matter.

Thanks,
