I'd like to add profiling data to the known standard::sort-order issue,
because in my case it goes far beyond log spam.
Environment:
Linux Mint 22.3 MATE (codename: zena), caja 1.26.3+mint1, GLib 2.80.
Symptoms:
Every caja process continuously emits GLib-GIO-CRITICAL: GFileInfo created
without standard::sort-order approximately every 0.4 seconds — 400,000+
messages in ~/.xsession-errors per ~24 hours, from two consecutive PIDs.
The caja process uses ~90–100% of one CPU core continuously, not only
during freezes.
Windows freeze when interacting with a previously opened window; caja -q
terminates the process correctly.
Happens even on a local folder with no file changes for hours; reproduced
with all caja extensions disabled (open-terminal, sendto, wallpaper, engrampa,
python plugins removed).
Diagnosis:
gdb backtrace of the main thread:
fm_directory_view_update_menus →
gtk_ui_manager_ensure_update →
GtkUIManager internals →
g_signal_handlers_disconnect_matched (libgobject), where the process spends
its CPU time.
Two distinct code paths per loop iteration are visible in the perf call
graph.
perf (5 s, 20K samples): 80.5% of all cycles in
g_signal_handlers_disconnect_matched.
strace -c (5 s): only ~2,050 syscalls, 0.026 s total — the loop is pure
userspace CPU, no I/O, no network.
RSS grows ~5 KB per 5 s (~90 MB/day; observed 780 MB after 24 h).
Root cause: this matches mate-desktop/caja#1704, fixed upstream in caja
1.26.4 (commit 1096ea06a10a68071ae304727a81a73375bfcee4). Ubuntu noble
still ships 1.26.3, and Mint 22.x (including 22.3) carries 1.26.3+mint1.
Also tracked on Launchpad as bug #2080913.
Request: please bump the caja package to 1.26.4 (or backport the fix) in
the Mint upstream repository. Until then, the practical workaround is to
avoid leaving caja windows open, or to switch the file manager to Nemo.
Full thread apply all bt full, perf.data and strace summary are
available on request.
