Public bug reported:
On my ASUS Vivobook M7400QE, the built-in speakers produce no sound in
Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. The speakers work in Windows on the same laptop, and
Bluetooth audio works in Ubuntu.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot Ubuntu and play audio in Firefox or run `speaker-test -D hw:1,0 -c 2 -t
wav`.
2. Select “Speakers - Ryzen HD Audio Controller” in Settings → Sound.
3. Listen through the laptop’s built-in speakers.
Actual result: No sound from the built-in speakers, including during the
direct ALSA speaker-test.
Expected result: Audio should play through the built-in speakers.
System:
- Laptop: ASUSTeK Vivobook_ASUSLaptop M7400QE_M7400QE
- Ubuntu: 26.04.1 LTS (resolute)
- Kernel: 7.0.0-43-generic
- Firmware/BIOS: M7400QE.311
- Audio codec: Realtek ALC294
- Audio subsystem ID: 0x10431ab2
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX
Troubleshooting:
- Confirmed “Speakers - Ryzen HD Audio Controller” is selected and volume is up.
- `wpctl status` showed Firefox audio routed to the analog output while a
YouTube video was playing.
- `amixer -c 1 scontents` showed Master, Speaker, Headphone, and PCM controls
on and at high volume.
- Tried disabling and re-enabling `Auto-Mute Mode`; no change.
- The ALC294 codec dump identifies the internal speaker pin as output and
powered.
- Bluetooth audio works; built-in speakers work in Windows.
- No wired headphones available to test.
