Public bug reported:
nvidia kernel module is not properly initialized at boot up.
This is probably a duplicate. But, I have a remedy that may help
pinpoint the problem.
I have the latest beta nvidia (169.07 x86_64) driver installed on a Dell
Precision M6300 notebook along with an up to date 7.10 desktop x86_64
Ubuntu install. When I allow the computer to boot from the default grub
configuration, gdm is unable to start X and I end up in the "low rez
warning screen". I can select continue and allow gdm to start in
640x480. Then switch to a vt, stop gdm, remove the nvidia kernel module
using modprobe -r nvidia. I then restart gdm and X comes up properly at
the correct resolution and all is well.
Also, when booting, I can select the safe boot up sequence. When the
command line is presented, I remove the nvidia kernel module then press
CTRL-D. The bootup process finishes and gdm starts X normally.
