Actually it has more to do with multiple users being able to run pulseaudio or esd. The 1000 happens to be your user ID on the system. The next user account you create will have the ID 1001, and if this user is in the correct groups and runs pulseaudio, his/her socket will be at /tmp/esd-1001/socket.
