Public bug reported:

Switching sound playback via Gnome menu System -> Preferences -> Sound
works fine. However I wanted a way to script this or run from terminal.

After discovering and installing asoundconf-gtk, switching the default
sound output device worked fine both from the asoundconf GUI and
terminal commands (and eventually a script).

However, this change is not reflected in the Gnome Sound Preferences.
