thanks for the very quick answer

attached are:
- the output from the cat command which suggests the "HDA Intel" device 
is attached to card 0
- a copy of the alsa-base file (reformatted windows-style)

No driver seems to be assigned to 0, so that might be a reason why no 
sound device is recognized.

Can you further advise?
