I'm having the same issue with ipw3945 on a Dell XPS m1330 -- initial connection is good. Sometimes will recover a lost connection "hiccup." However, after a while (1-2 hours later) the next hiccup will produce the failure to reconnect. The WiFi LED light stays on and becomes unresponsive to the hardwired kill switch. Disabling/re-enabling networking isn't an issue. The nm-applet will freeze, and sometimes freeze the rest of the desktop with it.
