I have also experienced Firefox stability issues in Gutsy. I believe the problem does not lie in Firefox. Here's my summary:
Installed 64-bit Kubuntu 7.10.... System and Firefox were ROCK solid. Never crashed or froze for weeks of use. Installed 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10.... Whole system was shaky but Firefox was very unstable and would crash or freeze every 10 or 20 minutes on average. Reinstalled 32-bit Kubuntu 7.10... system much better for whatever reason... Firefox much better too but still crashes usually by freezing every 3 or 4 hours of use.
