Ken, a few ideas:
First, disable ALL addons and non-standard themes in Firefox and restart it.
If that fixes the problem, the try adding them back on one at a time to find
out which one is causing the problem.
Second, if that doesn't work, backup your firefox settings directory ("cp
.mozilla mozilla-backup")
then "sudo apt-get remove --purge firefox"
make sure there is nothing in the .mozilla/firefox folder, if there is, delete
it (or move it to be safe)
then "sudo apt-get install firefox"
If any of those things work, then the problem was some enabled setting.
