I have the same problem. The icons on the toolbars would disappear when hovering the mouse over one of them (only the one under the mouse would be visible). The same thing happend for the menus.
I removed all openoffice.org packages (except language packages) and reinstalled the writer package. I then found that the openoffice.org-gtk package was the problem. As long as this package is not installed, I encounter no problems (bug is fixed).
