Public bug reported:

Booting the alpha4 desktop CD for amd64 I just get a black screen at
boot time after the "loading kernel" popup and a few lines of text. Even
the background light goes off. Selecting a different text mode (e.g.
vga=771) doesn't help. There is no moving boot logo.

After a few minutes I get a popup saying "Ubuntu is running in low-
graphics mode". I click on [Configure]. Model is Plugandpray, resolution
is set to 800x600 (the 1280x800 I might have selected at the boot time
is ignored). There is no 1280x800 screen to select from, either.

Next I select the "Graphics Card" tab, and chose the GeForce Series 8
driver. Back to the "Screen" tab I can select the generic 1280x800 LCD
panel now, select "Widescreen monitor", and click [OK] twice. After that
I am left alone in text mode :-(.

Booting in safe graphics I just get 800x600 in vesa mode, AFAICS.

Please note that this laptop works fine with Unstable Debian, in text
mode with vga=0x318, and using either the nv or the nvidia graphics
driver for X. Kernel is 2.6.24-rc8 or newer.
