Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to hardy, X goes into failsafe mode. As this is on a
headless (laptop with broken lcd) computer, I play around with esc and
enter, and after a bit, X starts and I am able to connect to the desktop
via VNC.

I then use System > Administration > Screens and graphics to try and
configure the graphics driver. It shows that it is using the VESA
driver. I tried to select "ati" or "radeon" or even the proprietory
"fglrx". In all cases, restarting the computer results in the X failsafe
mode.

This laptop has been using the "ati" driver successfully for a couple of
years, on various Ubuntu versions.
