I just wanted to point out that I am having the EXACT same issues. I
will say when Gutsy very first came out, using Hibernate would prevent
me from being able start ubuntu again and instead of getting too
involved, I just reinstalled Gutsy. After a couple rinse repeats of that
process, I stopped using hibernate for a few months. Now that it's
actually working again (I assume thanks to a couple of updates since the
initial release of Gutsy) I am experiencing the same oddities with
hibernating as described in this ticket. I'm on a Compaq C300 Celeron M
laptop if that helps any.
