Same problem with a WM5 device on USB running and using WPA on Wifi.
After plugging in the device dmesg|tail shows,
[ 1595.104000] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
[ 1595.316000] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 1595.548000] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_ether
[ 1595.668000] eth1: register 'rndis_host' at usb-0000:00:13.0-1, RNDIS device,
80:00:60:0f:e8:00
[ 1595.668000] usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_host
[ 1596.888000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): ath0: link becomes ready
After a reselect of the wifi network with nm-applet 0.6.5 dmesg|tail shows,
[ 1595.668000] usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_host
[ 1596.888000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): ath0: link becomes ready
[ 1624.520000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): ath0: link is not ready
[ 1717.020000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): ath0: link becomes ready
This fixes the network connection.
