Public bug reported:

Japanese input doesn't work even after running the "Language Support" script.
I have done an install in English, set keyboard to Japanese, and run the
"Language Support", which installs fine.
However, I cannot input Japanese characters in any programs
I have also tried to play around with Scim and Skim, but this still has no
effect

I am using Kubuntu Edgy Beta 1, on a Japanese IBM Thinkpad x32

One funny thing - If you install the entire system in Japanese and then
run language support, japanese input works. But this is a bad workaround
as it converts a lot of programs to Japanese, which is a royal pain to
rectify.

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
