I agree as well. Gaim is capable of doing IRC, but it's very poor at best and highly lacking in features. Xchat, Xchat-Gnome, irssi and/or BitchX should be considered. Mainly Xchat and irssi since these are the two most popular IRC clients out there today. As mentioned for a server install, since there is no X, irssi should be the default I would think and irssi and Xchat both should be the default for a regular non-server install.
Another issue as reported in another bug/wishlist by myself, is that Xchat is much more wanted and used than Xchat-Gnome, yet Xchat-Gnome is in main and Xchat is in universe. At the very least they should both be in main or it should be the other way around. With default sources, a user installs xchat, and they get xchat-gnome. Then, being an op of #Xchat on Freenode, they come in and ask all sorts of questions about what happened to their beloved Xchat and why it changed it so much instead of asking in #Xchat-Gnome. Very frustrating indeed. IIRC Xchat gets updated on a more regular basis than Xchat-Gnome does and for the most part Xchat-Gnome follows in the footsteps of Xchat so what's the point of not allowing the user to have the choice of either, or the one that is more widely used. -- GAIM should not be the sole irc client https://launchpad.net/bugs/63273 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
