[hardy desktop amd64 alpha 4]
This issue also presents on the Dell 1420, with the same integrated soundcard .
I researched this on #ubuntu+1 with the aid of crimsun (irc nickname). Please
see attachment for further relevant information, this is based on a clean
install of the above referenced iso. This is an alsa-driver issue
(snd-hda-intel). If alsa-driver-1.0.16rc2 is manually compiled and installed,
then alsa works on this machine, and so does pulseaudio.

crimsun suggested:

    pasuspender -- aplay /usr/share/sounds/*up.wav

This resulted in no sound, indicating an alsa issue. He/she localized
it to the driver specifically. I manually compiled and installed alsa-
driver-1.0.16rc2. I then opened gnome-volume-control, selected the
surround control ( edit > preferences ) and unmuted it. Running the
above command again resulted in normal sound through the speakers.
Running it again without pasuspender resulted in normal sound through
speakers indicating expected pulseaudio operation.

crimsun indicated that he/she was going to prepare an update, which has
not hit yet. I believe the snd-hda-intel driver is provided in linux-
backports-modules.
