I can also be available for discussion at #ubuntu+1 as hmuller, coordination required. As of the latest release, the simplest solution is to merely hit F6 and strip splash, then boot the livecd. If splash is not stripped, then displayconfig-gtk pops up and the screen and graphic cards have to be configured. Once configured, the installation can proceed normally.
