Yep this happened in ubuntu via wubi 7.04 install. install went well but
wouldn't run in 256m ram with 10 gig free its just like the error (follow up
) describes when I turn off BSD update everything goes well.

So I understood this correctly? You click in update-manager on "Install
updates" and then nothing happens and everything hangs? That sounds like a
issue with "gksu" (the application that is used to launch applications as
superuser).
