This still happened with a fresh install of the current
kubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso (from ftp5.gwdg.de, md5 ok). After those
segfaults adept_updater claimed a new version of kubuntu was available.
It then tried to upgrade to 7.10 (silly of course, since it was on 7.10
already), but was hanging and had to be killed.

In my solution a simple apt-get update && apt-get -f install at least
managed to fix part of it, a subsequent adept_updater finally worked as
expected. After a reboot to make the new kernel feel comfortable
everything looks as nice as always :-)
