Binary package hint: openoffice.org
Not sure how to describe this one so please bear with me.
I've been using OO.org for a few years (currently on 2.3.1). Last week my PC
(about 5 years old, fast but single stream processor XP home SP2) started to go
wrong so I'm just setting up a new one (faster with dual processor stream & XP
professional - SP2)
When I load a straighforwad text file created on the old machine everything is
fine. When I try to load a text file containing tables, or a spread sheet each
created on the old machine, it looks like the file starts to open, then OO just
disappears - just shuts down like I'd given it the "red X" - completely removes
itself from the system. No error message - nothing.
So I copied the file to another machine (same config as my old one). The file
opened fine. I saved it in (sorry for this) Excel format. Copied it back to my
new machine & it opened fine. So I saved it in ODS format & closed down OO.org.
Restarted OO.org and opened the file that I'd just saved and everything worked
just fine.
(Oh, before that I'd also tried completely removing OO.org & reinstalling it &
removing & reinstalling Sun Java just incase I'd got a corrupt install. The
OO.org instal file is the one downloaded from the OO website a few months ago &
installed on both of the other computers).
I've even tried it out on an old ODS file created & not touched since
well before the machine started to go wrong - same thing OO just
disappears when I try to open the file.
