Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
This could be a problem in compiz, in metacity, or in the Gnome
workspace switcher.
When I initially installed Gutsy, I set myself up with 4 x 2 workspaces.
Then I had to turn off Compiz (effectively switching to Metacity)
because of bug 133118. At that point, Metacity ended up with a fairly
weird workspace geometry, but all I had to do was right-click on the
workspace switcher and configure it back to 4x2 (I think by telling it 8
workspaces, 2 rows)
Now that 133118 is basically fixed, I switched back, and found myself
with the opposite problem: there are "ghost" workspaces from metacity
but compiz has this weird idea that there are 7 workspaces in a single
row (even though the preferences have 8, I can only switch between 7 of
them) and the workspace switcher displays another row underneath which I
cannot switch to.
Again, opening up the preferences and reconfiguring to 4x2 fixed this;
but it would be neat if it worked without these haphazard artefacts (and
also if the geometry was conceptualized the same way in both window
managers, i.e. either rows x columns or number of workspaces in how many
rows ... I think I prefer the former, as that doesn't have corner cases
like you would have with 7 in 2 rows, or 8 in 3 rows).
(Incidentally, I also have this on a different box where I use Sawfish
as my preferred window manager; again, it uses a different facility for
configuring the workspace and viewport geometry, which is not in sync
with the Gnome workspace switcher.)
Ubuntu 7.10, all of -proposed -securty -backports enabled
