It's worse than this.
I've just performed a clean install from the alternative installer. If I add a 
launcher from the menu to the desktop (e.g. firefox) I get the launcher without 
an icon - just the empty sheet of paper. The launcher works however. 
Right clicking to get properties and then selecting the launcher tab should 
allow me to change the icon. However, the option is not there. It is not 
possible to change from the sheet of paper at all. However, if I right click on 
the desktop and manually add a launcher such as firefox, the firefox icon is 
correctly displayed. However, again, there is no option to change the icon.
Oddly, if I add a launcher from the menu to the panel there is no problem.
