I now notice that my display brightness hotkeys are behaving strangely (and not in the way I originally described). I don't know if my mucking around with the /sys stuff did it or what, but holding down the "decrease brightness" key causes brightness to fluctuate, but ultimately ends up at a value that actual_brightness reports as 20.
