--- Hi Chris I did make the change that you suggest first. Does not make a difference. Can't change the language in the writing aids and as a consequence the automatic spell checker won't work.
Are you based in Montreal? Sean --- Writing Aids has no bearing on OOo allowing you to spell check languages, at least unless the dictionary is already installed and is turned off under Writing Aids for some reason. You have to have the languages dictionary installed first, which you can do by going to File->Wizards->Install new dictionaries. Once the dictionary is installed for the language you can select which language the document and/or to use by default by going to Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages->Default languages for documents->Western->English (Canada). If the language has a blue checkmark with the letters 'ABC' to the left of 'English (Canada)' then the spell checker is installed properly for OOo to use it. If it still doesn't work you can look under Writing Aids to make sure that under the 'English (Canada)' section that the spellchecker option has a checkbox enabling its functionality. However the settings under Writing Aids don't actually tell OpenOffice which spellcheck to use for a particular document or what to use by default, that is configuredunder the Language Settings->Languages section. By the way, when I installed the English (Canada) dictionary on my machine I had to go under Writing Aids and click on the checkbox to turn on the dictionary for it to work. No, I am located in Houston, Texas, USA.
