Thanks to Gero, I installed the same older version of the flash player
and I can confirm that  it no longer crashes and it can play all the
pages (so far) that it needs to.  See above for my config.

The archive that you need to download is a large (~75MB) archive:
<http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip>
 that contains all sub-versions for all platforms for that version.  The r48 
linux version is contained in a tar file contained in the large zip file.
