It was compiz startup script, something like:

#!/bin/bash
gnome-window-decorator & compiz --replace gconf decoration wobbly fade
minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place switcher &

I removed compiz few months ago but apparently I forgot to remove
startup script from Gnome session startup programs.

Everything was working fine until upgrading to Edgy; after the upgrade,
as I said, only error was that metacity didn't load. So, when I opened
any program in Gnome it ended up without window manager. If I opened
console and run metacity manually, window manager loaded and everything
worked fine.

Now, after removing that compiz script from Gnome session startup
programs, metacity loads perfectly.
