In brief, the issue at faultis the sound preview function (by Nautilus, I presume). Issuing "killall nautilus" in a terminal only temporarily eliminates the problem. It may be solved by disabling the preview function as follows: Edit >> Preferences >> Preview Tab >> Set Preview Sound Files to 'Never'.
