I can reproduce this bug using the OOs 2.3.0 packages provided by
Ubuntu, but I *cannot* reproduce it with the latest OOo 2.3.1 packages
downloaded from www.openoffice.org.

So either this bug *is* Ubuntu-specific, or it's been fixed in 2.3.1.
Another workaround, then, is to install the latest OOo packages from
www.openoffice.org and uninstall the ones provided with Ubuntu.  You may
have to use Synaptic to lock the OOo packages at version 2.3.1, or else
the update manager will helpfully try to "update" your working OOo
packages to the older versions.
