I have the same problem. I'm running Gusty on Acer Aspire 5050, ATI x1100. To get around it, install startup manager (sudo apt-get install startupmanager), disable the splash screen and choose show text. That way by default you see whatever is being done during boot (and i prefer it cos it's faster and if it ever locks up or freezes, i see what caused it). Hope this helps.
